Understand the result
Spot value is not a buying price
The result is the value of the pure metal content at the latest spot price. Nobody pays the full spot value for scrap: refiners and buyers deduct their charges for melting, assaying and refining, and their margin. The deduction differs between buyers, metals and lot sizes, so ask for the payout terms in writing and compare offers.
Use the stamped fineness
The calculator uses the fineness stamped on the piece, as the trade quotes it (14K is stamped 585). Solder, settings, springs and under-karat pieces lower the real content, and stones must be removed and weighed out first. Only an assay of the melted lot gives the exact content.
Where the prices come from
Spot prices are read every hour from gold-api.com and stored on our server; exchange rates are central banks' published reference rates, via Frankfurter, updated once a working day. See the metal prices page for charts.
