One name, different weights

Several traditional units share a name but not a weight. A tael is 37.429 g in the Hong Kong gold trade, 37.7994 g in Singapore and Malaysia, 37.5 g in Taiwan and 50 g in mainland China's market system. The Thai baht is 15.16 g for gold jewellery but 15.244 g for gold bars. Always confirm which unit a supplier means.

Never use the everyday (avoirdupois) ounce for precious metals: a troy ounce is about 10% heavier.
